Why work for City of Bothell Fire and E.M.S.?
Being a firefighter is more than taking a written test and possessing physical strength. It involves teaching our community how to be safe; spending time with children and teens; relating to a diverse population (age, disabilities, ethnicity and culturally); maintaining vehicles, the firehouse, your living quarters; handling the mundane and the crisis. It's lending a hand and a listening ear; being a friend, a leader and being able to give and receive orders; caring for the environment and caring for each other; sharing laughter and tears, the bitter and the sweet. It's making a difference with your life.

A degree in Fire Service or having volunteered as a firefighter is not necessary to become one. We are looking beyond technical skills. We are looking for individuals who are willing to serve.

City of Bothell values individuals who are team players, problem solvers, give to their community, have a commitment to fitness, have a willingness to work hard, have mechanical aptitude and display a sense of humor. We consider a team player to be someone who pitches in where needed, from fighting fires to maintaining good station hygiene whether that involves washing rigs or emptying the trash.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Are you willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done?
  • Are you comfortable taking orders?
  • Are you a problem solver?

We value mechanical aptitude.

  • Can you improvise or do you need that special tool?
  • Can you go over, under, around or through an obstacle to reach your goal?
  • Do you enjoy working with your hands?
  • Have you worked construction, plumbing, electrical, electronic, or worked on automobiles?

This is a physically demanding career.

  • Are you committed to being physically fit?
  • Is that a priority in your life?
  • Do you work out frequently? Are you physically active? Sports, hiking, etc.

We value individuals who value their community and give back through volunteer efforts not necessarily through the fire service.

  • Do you coach, assist seniors, tutor kids at risk or help newly arrived immigrants adjust to our culture?
  • Do you volunteer in your community?
  • If you were overseas, did you learn the culture and/or language of the host country?
  • Are you bilingual? Multilingual?
  • Are you willing to work hard on the difficult days as well as the less demanding days?
  • Do you stay until the job is done?
  • Do you go the extra mile to ensure there are no loose ends?

This can be a stressful career. Balance is needed.

  • Do you have a sense of humor?
  • Can you find the balance between the serious and light in life?
  • Can you take a joke?

You may have said no to some of these questions. That's okay. The question to the answer is: Are you willing to learn? We are looking for people who are willing to learn what's needed to accomplish the task at hand.
