SMART Team Investigating Officer Involved Shooting Smart Incident 20-04

BOTHELL, Wash. – At about 7:30PM on July 29, Bothell Police responded to a 911 call reporting a male subject slashing tires with a knife near 228th Ave SE and 20th Ave SE in Bothell. The first responding Bothell officer made contact with the male subject, at which point the subject advanced towards the officer with a knife and the officer fired multiple shots at him. The officer then radioed that shots had been fired and requested aid. Other responding officers immediately began performing life saving measures on the adult male subject. Once medics arrived they transported the male subject to Harborview Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. A knife has been recovered from the scene.

The Bothell Officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.

Per Washington State Administrative Code (WAC 139.2) regarding requirements for Independent Investigation Teams (IIT), two civilian Community Member Representatives have reviewed this release of information.

The investigation is being conducted by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART). SMART is a team of investigators, evidence technicians, records specialist, and public information officers from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies and Washington State Patrol, who respond to, and investigate, police use of force incidents. There are civilian community members that also serve on the SMART team per the Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act (LETSCA). When the SMART investigation is complete, results will be forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
